Contemporary Architecture Programme
In 2006, The British School at Rome set up an architecture programme of lectures and exhibitions to create a forum for discussion between British and Italian scholars and professionals. Through the activities of this programme, we also intend to promote and expand our architecture scholarships.
From 2006-8, we concentrated on the theme “Spaces for Art”. Leading British and Italian architects were invited to analyse the relationship between art and architecture. Visiting architects included David Chipperfield, Adam Caruso, Tony Fretton, David Adjaye and Future Systems.
The exhibitions are entirely supported by sponsors who include; Adjaye Associates, Agenzia Culturale del Quebec, Arup Italia, the Australian Embassy, the Bryan Guinness Charitable Trust, the British Council, Buro Happold, the Canadian Embassy, the Cochemé Charitable Trust, the John S. Cohen Foundation, the Henry Moore Foundation, INARCH, IGuzzini, the Nicholas Boas Charitable Trust and Page Service.
Partners include: Architecture Foundation, La Sapienza University, the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali and Fondazione MAXXI in Rome, New London Architecture and Roma 3 University.
The programme is curated by Marina Engel

Programme of lectures Spring 2008 -Spring 2010
In June 2008, the British School at Rome started a new cycle of exhibitions and lectures on the theme “London-Rome: Work in Process”.
The objective has been to discuss the influences, experiences and expectations of the younger generation of architects in the two capitals by pinpointing and comparing their working methods and approaches. The invitation has been extended to three Rome and three London architecture practices that represent different ways of dealing with architectural research and practice in the two cities.
Visiting architects have included; MaO, Andrea Stipa, AOC and Carmody Groarke. Witherford Watson Mann will be the last of the British practices to participate and IAN+ will close the series in February 2010.
A series of round table talks between the London and Rome architects will conclude the programme, at the Royal College of Art, in February 2010. The talks are organised in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation.
